What Is Going On With North's CSGO Team?
North, since its inception, has been one of the two Danish powerhouse organizations in Counter Strike: Global Offensive alongside Astralis. The team has consistently fielded some of the best Danish players including Kristian "k0nfig" Wienecke, Emil "Magisk" Reif , and Valdemar "valde" Bjørn Vangså. Unfortunately, the team has been on a downward spiral, not placing very highly in a majority of events they attend, and has hit a new low with their new roster change.
On May 2, the team announced that the organization would be parting ways with in-game leader and AWPer Casper "cadiaN" Møller, and would be replacing him with fellow Danish AWPer Jakob "JUGi" Hansen. With this change, valde also was announced to be the teams new IGL.
This change left a lot of people scratching their heads as to why this change was made. Firstly, JUGi has been a very inconsistent player for the past year. During his tenure with OpTic gaming, the sniper was extremely inconsistent. The Dane would show flashes of brilliance one game, and completely vanish the next game. Whether it be team cohesion, an individual slump, or attitude, JUGi posted his lowest career rating in 2018 with a rating of 1.08. As a primary carry that has a majority of his team’s resources put into him, the sniper’s rating should be much higher.
The largest issue I have with this role change is vade becoming IGL. Valde has been a superstar for North, and has shown incredible talent and promise as a high IQ lurker. In-game leading for a team is a very strenuous task, often dropping players ratings when taking up the mantle of IGL. Snax, coldzera, and NiKo are all star players who have ruined their individual form or teams after attempting to lead. North should have instead replaced cadiaN with a young and untested IGL, or given the mantle of IGL to a role player in the team such as aizy or gade.
Time will tell if North’s move pays off, but with roster moves like this, it is hard to have hope for the Danish mainstay organization.
